Meta Partners with Instagram Creators to Fight Teen Sextortion Scams

Meta has launched a new initiative aimed at tackling the growing threat of sextortion scams targeting teenagers on Instagram. With the help of popular content creators, the social media giant seeks to raise awareness and equip young users and their parents with the tools to identify and prevent these scams.

This collaborative campaign is part of Meta’s broader effort to enhance Instagram teen safety measures and ensure a safer online environment for young users.

Sextortion, where victims are coerced into sharing explicit content under threat of exposure, has increasingly targeted teenagers on social media platforms like Instagram. According to a 2023 report from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, incidents of online sextortion have surged, with teens being a primary target.

Recognizing the severity of the issue, Meta has introduced various sextortion prevention measures in recent years. However, this new campaign stands out for its unique approach, leveraging influential creators to deliver the message directly to teens.

Unlike previous initiatives, Meta’s latest campaign has enlisted some of Instagram’s top content creators to share educational content with their followers.

This content creator partnership for safety aims to connect with young audiences in a relatable and engaging way, ensuring that the anti-sextortion message reaches as many teens as possible. By involving creators who are trusted and followed by millions, the campaign can resonate more effectively with Instagram’s younger demographic.

Although Meta has yet to release a full list of participating creators, the campaign officially launched on October 17th, with influencers already posting safety tips and raising awareness about sextortion risks.
