In a significant social media update, Instagram’s Threads platform has introduced a new feature that allows users to see who follows them from other fediverse servers.
This change, announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, deepens Threads’ integration with the fediverse, also known as the open social web. Users who have connected their Threads accounts to the fediverse can now track interactions—such as followers and likes—from decentralized platforms like Mastodon and Pixelfed.
The latest update not only enhances visibility into these cross-platform interactions but also offers users up to 15 minutes to edit or adjust their posts after publishing.
To view followers from other fediverse servers, users can tap on their post’s activity or follower list and click on the “fediverse followers” section, revealing who is engaging with their content from platforms outside of Threads.
The Journey Towards a More Open Social Web
This move is part of Threads’ ongoing efforts to strengthen its connection with the fediverse. In March 2024, Instagram first allowed Threads users to connect their accounts with the fediverse, enabling greater cross-platform interaction.
By continuing to expand these capabilities, Instagram seems to be embracing the broader decentralized social media ecosystem, offering users more control and visibility across multiple platforms.
